Having just seen the new product Portfolio for Chrysler's 2007 and 2008 model years, all I have to say is look out. A combination of All Wheel Drive Sedans, Retractable Hard Top Convertibles and Hybrids will make the auto industry envious.

From there we will have a new Dodge Challenger, Hemi Cuda. All new Minivans with the next generation of Stow-N-Go and a new Jeep Rally Car. Stay tuned, this is going to get fun!

At the California International Auto Show today, the Chrysler Group confirmed production of the Dodge Nitro mid-size SUV for the 2007 model year. Nitro will be the first mid-size SUV for Dodge, completing the brand's current lineup of cars, minivans, trucks, commercial vehicles and a full-size SUV.

"The Dodge Nitro will strengthen and grow the Dodge brand by allowing us to attract a new buyer," said Steven Landry, Vice President - Dodge Marketing, Chrysler Group. "Dodge Nitro will be more than just another typical mid-size SUV; it will attract customers looking for distinctive style, affordable performance and utility."

The Dodge Nitro is based on the Dodge Nitro concept vehicle that was unveiled at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show in February, 2005.

The Dodge Nitro concept vehicle, along with the Dodge Caliber concept vehicle unveiled at the 2005 Geneva Auto Show in March, 2005, signify the global expansion of the brand, and embody the bold, powerful and capable characteristics of Dodge. Both the Dodge Nitro and Dodge Caliber will be available for markets outside North America.

Dodge Nitro Concept With a uniquely bold, powerful design statement that will ignite the mid-size SUV segment, the Dodge Nitro's crisp lines and substantial body size create a brawny character not found in any other mid-size SUV. The Dodge Nitro's spacious interior is both functional and flexible for people and cargo. Chrome, silver and red accents have a dynamic presence throughout the interior. The five-passenger Nitro is designed to attract a customer seeking a distinctive style, sporty performance and cargo flexibility.

Dodge Caliber Concept A new slant on one of the world's most competitive segments, the Dodge Caliber concept's powerful design shatters the conventional definition of what a global compact car should be. As a five-door vehicle that features a rear hatch, the Dodge Caliber concept combines a sporty, coupe-like profile with the strength, stance and functionality of an SUV.

Dodge Caliber's powertrain will offer many firsts - it will be the first Chrysler Group vehicle to offer the full range of World Engines and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT2), which contributes to a 6 - 8 percent improvement in fuel economy compared with a traditional four-speed automatic transmission. A 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine will be available for markets outside North America. The Dodge Caliber also will be Chrysler Group's first all-wheel drive C-segment vehicle.

Dodge Brand Armed with these seven all-new vehicles, momentum for the Dodge brand will continue to build this year and in 2006:

Dodge Caliber -- a global vehicle that shatters the conventional compact car market With a U.S. market share of 6.9 percent, Dodge is the fifth-largest nameplate in the United States and the eighth-largest nameplate in the automotive industry. In 2004, Dodge sold more than 1.4 million vehicles in the global market.

Dodge continues to lead the minivan market segment with a 20 percent market share in the United States. In the truck market, Dodge has an 18 percent market share. In the car market, Dodge has a 4.5 percent market share. The Dodge brand will arrive in Europe and other volume markets outside of North America starting in 2006.

A Chrysler/VW Minivan?

Volkswagen Gets Its Microbus? From Chrysler?

Just because it looks like Volkswagen brand chief Wolfgang Bernhard won't be returning to DaimlerChrysler to run Mercedes-Benz under incoming chief executive Dieter Zetsche, that doesn't mean the two former close colleagues can't help each other out.

When Bernhard took over the reins at Volkswagen, he was appalled to find the scant product development surrounding SUVs and a minivan, two natural segments for VW. The company had scrapped plans for a Microbus as it was shown at the Detroit auto show in 2001 because it was too expensive to build and would cost too much at retail given currency fluctuations and high labor costs in Europe. But Bernhard, who demonstrated at Chrysler how distinct vehicles could be built off the same platform (think 300C, Magnum, and Charger), will reportedly cut a deal with his old company to modify a Chrysler minivan into a VW van.

The plan was first reported in German newspaper Handelsblatt, with details expected to follow at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. The deal would be a boost to both companies as Chrysler could add perhaps 30,000 units of production to its minivan plant, while VW would get a much needed shot in its product lineup. Details will be interesting as neither company will want to rebadge a Chrysler minivan. It will have to be distinctly a Volkswagen, which means considerable interior and perhaps exterior refitting.

Volkswagen sales are declining, off more than 33,000 units from last year despite the new Jetta, though sales are in part impacted by would-be Passat and Golf buyers awaiting the new models. Touareg sales are off by one-third. The Phaeton, a non-starter, is off by about half. New Beetle sales are down to 23,000 through seven months.

Despite Bernhard's prowess in product development and design, a VW minivan built off a Chrysler has a high design bar to reach. VW executives have traditionally wanted a van that would price below $30,000, but one that was "uniquely a Volkswagen." Bernhard successfully developed the Crossfire off the Mercedes SLK, with no one griping that it was a knockoff or unworthy. The same, however, can't be said for GM's attempt to turn a Chevy TrailBlazer into the Saab 9-7X or the Subaru WRX into the Saab 9-2X. -Jim Burt

Liberty Diesels from Automotive News.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- The Chrysler group has built more than 8,300 Jeep Liberty SUVs with diesel engines and expects production to hit 10,000 units this calendar year - double the amount it originally predicted. More than 60,000 consumers have expressed interest in the vehicle.

That success is helping Chrysler be bullish on diesel-powered vehicles in the American market, said Frank Klegon, vice president of product development process and components, at the Management Briefing Seminars on Friday.

The limit on building more diesel Liberty SUVs is constraints on engine production at supplier VM Motori in Cento, Italy. That factory supplies the 2.8-liter diesel used in the Liberty and diesel engines used in Chrysler group vehicles sold in Europe.

Chrysler is considering using diesels in other North American products. Jeep Grand Cherokees and Chrysler 300 sedans sold in Europe are fitted with diesels. Klegon said all new Chrysler products that will be sold in Europe are being engineered to accept a diesel powertrain.

HERE WE GO AGAIN!!!

Employee pricing looks like it might be here to stay. Both GM and Chrysler extended the hugely successful program through Labor day. In a news conference yesterday Chrysler Sales Manager Gary Dilts emphasized that "we are not putting a definite ending date on the Employee program."

Overall Chrysler sales were up almost 40% with some models like the Pacifica and Minivan showing a 100% sales increase over July 2004. I know that from our point of view the program worked very well. Our total 2005 inventory is down to around 10 vehicles.

Speaking of vehicles, the county's very first Dodge Charger RT is in our front row of cars and we will soon have 5 more Chrysler 300C's with the powerful yet fuel-efficient Hemi.

Reaction in Stuttgart was akin to the munchkins in The Wizard of Oz seeing the Wicked Witch of the East under the house. One commentator on CNN International quipped that German beer stocks also gained because of the celebrations that were expected this weekend throughout Germany.

The words most often used to describe Schrempp tend to be "imperial" and "arrogant." Fortune Magazine auto writer Alex Taylor III even used "bully" in his Thursday online story. Schrempp has been reviled for years among investors, analysts and many employees as he has dismissed critics frustrated with the company's loss in market capitalization since acquiring Chrysler in 1998, underestimating the problems at Chrysler, botching the transition of ownership, leaving inept American management in place too long, letting Mercedes-Benz drift sink in quality as it over-invested in glitch-prone electronics, not being able to turn a profit at the Smart division and forcing Wolfgang Bernhard out of the company essentially because he was too vocal about problems at Mercedes-Benz and for not backing Schrempp's investment in Mitsubishi. More recently, senior executives under his watch were forced out after they were charged with misappropriating funds, selling gray-market cars and having work done on their houses by company employees. Enough was enough even for this German supervisory board.

Among the media covering DaimlerChrysler, conversations around bars and auto shows frequently drifted to disbelief that Schrempp still had a job at all, something often chalked up to his relationship with the DaimlerChrysler supervisory board, and especially with Deutsche Bank. But the big German bank confirmed Thursday that it is selling up to 35 million of its shares in DaimlerChrysler AG, representing about a 3.5-percent stake in the company. The remaining stake of the bank in DaimlerChrysler will be at 6.9 percent and the bank is widely expected to sell that down in the future. With DB becoming less a factor in DaimlerChrysler, Schrempp, whose contract was to run through 2007, was losing his political cover.

Zetsche is the opposite of Schrempp in most ways. He is more coach than king in management style. He is respected on both sides of the pond. He made friends easily when he arrived at Chrysler in 2001 with a cloud hanging over him as he and Bernhard replaced American managers. A USA Today article in 2002 quoted industry maven Dr. David Cole saying about Zetsche's reception at Chrysler after six months on the job: "They expected Adolf Hitler and they got Martin Luther."

Schrempp will hardly be missed.

By far the most Charitable person in Ephrata, Dave Canfield has met with community leaders to start a new charity drive labeled simply "The Community that Cares."

With any aliment, there are certain costs that are not covered under the insurance umbrella. This charity is targeted to help community members with some of those cost to reduce their out of pocket expenses which in some cases can reach into the tens of thousands of dollars.

On Thursday this week my father Barry Morford was diagnosed with ALS. ALS is more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Lou Gehrig's Disease is a non-curable nervous system disorder which slowly degenerates the nervous system until the body cannot communicate with itself.

The support and friendship over the past couple of days has been much appreciated.

Liberty Diesel

There was a great article on www.edmunds.com discussing the mileage comparison of the all new Jeep Liberty turbo diesel with the Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX400h Hybrid.

Interesting to note that while being able to tow 5000 lbs, the Liberty scored better in terms of real world fuel economy...at a price discount of tens of thousands of dollars.

Chrysler 300C's

Last week we took delivery of 2 Chrysler 300C's and early this next week, we will get another. After driving the 300C, it really is easy to see why they are praised so much in the automotive media. For a mere $35,000, you get a package that is more dynamic than an Audi A6, more style than a BMW 5 Series. With the 5.7L Hemi under the hood, it even out-accelerates a Porsche Boxter. Not bad for a car that is over $10,000 less than every other car I mentioned.

Prices are amazing now-a-days. A fully loaded Audi A6 tops out at $59,000! Remember when nice cars were high-priced at $20,000? Makes me wonder what's next.
